5 Truths About Preloved Shopping You Should Know

5 Truths About Preloved Shopping You Should Know

The idea of shopping preloved or secondhand isn’t something new. Actually, these days it’s more popular than ever. Whether you’re concerned about spending smartly in the time of the pandemic, or growing an interest in fashion sustainability,  the resale market is predicted to overtake fast fashion by the end of the decade! Can you believe that? Fashion will finally be able to breathe again.

However, despite the exciting news, there are still common misconceptions and myths on preloved shopping that keeps some of us at bay. We’re listing 5 of the most popular myths, and diving in to debunk them with good ol’ facts:

Myth #2

The styles are outdated
While the fact of that matter is that most items offered on resale platforms, including Second Edit’s, are from a few seasons back, many preloved shoppers actually opt to shop preloved for the thrill of finding hidden gems and unique, memorable items you can no longer find at the store. A study by Farfetch has also stated that one of the top reasons people shop preloved is to find rare items.

Trends tend to repeat themselves, too. Besides, trends have become saturated ever since the presence of social media and influencers, that they are merely just another idea or inspiration. So, instead of using trends as a deciding factor to splurge on what’s new, why not use it as an inspiration to renew your excitement in old-but-gold classics? Invest in timeless pieces and designs  that will stand the test of time. Remember, the mark of a good purchase is one that lasts a long time.

Myth #1

The items are pretty worn out and in poor quality
One of the most common misconceptions, indeed. Preloved items may come in less-than-perfect conditions, but that also means they were very well-loved! It also depends on where you shop your secondhand goods from. When you shop from a classifieds marketplace like eBay or Carousell, you might get items of varying condition standards, sold by a portal of different sellers and merchants.

At Second Edit, we curate high-quality items that have proven to stand through the test of time of repeated washes and wear. We take care to list the conditions of our items, from pristine, like-new to fair, with items labeled as ‘fair’ having only small fixable defects.

We try to be as transparent as possible when it comes to the condition of the items, with clear condition labels stated in each product description to make preloved shopping more comfortable for you. After all, who would want the shock of receiving an item in an unexpectedly bad condition?

The item’s authenticity is questionable

Myth #4

It’s hard to find the items that you like in the right size
Not too long ago, certain luxury fashion brands were known to throw their unused stock straight into raging fires, just to maintain “exclusivity”. The outrage that followed this news went on to show that there was a growing community of sustainable and ethical consumers, who were more than ready to call for an end to the wasteful linear economy of fashion.

What has buying secondhand got to do with this? On a personal level, choosing to buy secondhand helps to prevent unused designer bags from prematurely ending up in the landfills. Instead, you’re increasing the number of wears in a bag’s lifespan, and contributing to the sustainable circular economy — kudos to you!

Myth #5

The browsing process is overwhelming
So, you’re excited to buy preloved, but the only thing holding youback is the fear of counterfeits lurking in shady thrift shops. Nobodywants to be duped with a high-grade fake that escaped the eye of anauthentication expert! What Makes the Chanel Wallet a Must-Have

Updated on 10 May 2022
Everything You Need to Know About Your BFF: Chanel Wallet
Few things in the world of fashion are as instantly recognisable and eternally chic as a Chanel handbag or wallet. As the maison’s Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel memorably declared, “Fashion fades, only style remains.” No other house embodies this sentiment more completely than Chanel, whose handbags are seen as fashion statements and status symbols in popular culture. Like its larger sister, the Chanel handbag, a Chanel wallet is an equally timeless choice for any Chanel lover.

Pictured: Catherine Deneuve wearing a Chanel 2.55 bag featuring the curved back pocket in 1961 (Farabola/Leemage)
The famous quilting design is said to have drawn inspiration from the diamond quilts of jockey riding jackets.

Chanel Wallet Styles
Chanel wallets are, essentially, variations on the ultimate Chanel vanity: the Chanel handbag. The design of a Chanel wallet reflects this, echoing the rich histories and different styles of iconic Chanel bags such as the Chanel 2.55 bag or the Chanel Boy Bag. It can also come in different variations such as in a Chanel zip or long wallet, or a Chanel Wallet on Chain.
Chanel 2.55 Wallet
Named after the date of its launch in February 1955, the Chanel 2.55 bag was dreamed up by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to give its wearer a hands-free independence. Drawing inspiration from soldiers' packs, the 2.55 revolutionised the shoulder bag by adding a long chain shoulder strap - a design first that liberated women from the restrictions of stiff top handles. With the practicality of the 2.55 came a new era of freedom.

Every 2.55 bag is woven throughout with the personal stories from Coco’s life, and the Chanel 2.55 wallet is no different. Whether it’s the Chanel 2.55 flap wallet or Wallet On Chain, the signature rectangular clasp - named the Mademoiselle lock after Coco’s decision to not marry - and the diamond quilting, inspired by her love of equestrian sports, are hard to miss.

Material: Aged calfskin, lambskin, caviar, patent
Price Range: From S$640 for a card holder to more than S$4,000 for a Wallet On Chain

Chanel Boy Wallet
The Chanel Boy wallet is a reinterpretation of the Chanel Boy Bag, an edgier cousin to the 2.55.

With its bolder, boxier frame and its tough-luxe brick lock clasp, the Boy Bag first made waves when it was launched in the Chanel Fall/Winter 2011 collection. Named after Arthur "Boy" Capel, the great love and muse of Coco's life, the Boy Bag departed from Chanel's more classic styles and embraced a rock 'n' roll spirit that made it an instant hit among It girls.

Like the Boy Bag, the Chanel Boy wallet embodies its experimental spirit. While it’s most often seen in Chanel’s classic diamond quilting, it can also come in other patterns such as the sleeker chevron quilting, or 'reverso' quilting, which 'reverses' the Boy Bag's usual quilting pattern by having an unquilted body and a quilted frame.

Material: Aged calfskin, lambskin, caviar, patent
Price Range: From S$640 for a Chanel card holder to more than S$4,000 for a Wallet On Chain

Chanel Wallet on Chain (WOC)
Perfect for minimalists on the go, the Chanel Wallet On Chain (WOC) is a miniature classic first launched in 1997. A compact way to store your essentials, the WOC contains six card slots, zipped pockets and a middle open compartment, so that you'll never have to sacrifice style for simplicity.

The genius of the WOC lies in its versatility. How exactly do you wear a Chanel Wallet on Chain? The possibilities are endless. With its 24-inch chain strap, it's the perfect accessory for every occasion - whether as an evening clutch with the strap tucked in, or as an everyday crossbody wallet slung against your favourite distressed jeans.

As the WOC is a popular silhouette among Chanel’s bag lineup, it has been adapted into a range of styles, including the Classic Flap, the 2.55, the Half Moon, the Camellia, among others. Its high demand speaks to its popularity as an affordable gateway into the world of Chanel.

Chanel Wallet Leather Guide
Chanel wallets are, essentially, variations on the ultimate Chanel vanity: the Chanel handbag. The design of a Chanel wallet reflects this, echoing the rich histories and different styles of iconic Chanel bags such as the Chanel 2.55 bag or the Chanel Boy Bag. It can also come in different variations such as in a Chanel zip or long wallet, or a Chanel Wallet on Chain.
Caviar
Put caviar leather at the top of your shopping list if you're on the lookout for a hard-wearing Chanel caviar wallet that can withstand wear and tear. Well-sought after for its more scratch- and water-resistant surface, as compared to more delicate leathers like lambskin, the pebbled finish of caviar leather can definitely handle a bit of abuse.
Lambskin
With its butter-soft texture and vivid depth of colour, it's little wonder that lambskin leather is among the most coveted leathers for Chanel bags and wallets. But for all its luxurious characteristics, Chanel lambskin leather is considered delicate, and its untreated texture makes it more prone to damage than other leathers.
Calfskin
Sophisticated and chic, Chanel's signature quilted calfskin leather is a great choice that lands in between caviar and lambskin leather. Similar to lambskin, it's smooth with a fine grain, while being slightly more durable.

If you're looking for a Chanel wallet with a more ragged, vintage appeal, then aged calfskin leather should be your go-to choice. Not only does it stand up to Chanel caviar leather in terms of toughness, but it's also easy to clean and maintain.
Patent
Here's a bag tip from us: if it shines, chances are the bag will require more maintenance than you might expect. The same goes for Chanel's patent leather. Its glossy, highly treated finish is vulnerable to dents and stains, which may be hard to remove over time. Opt for a darker colour which will make signs of wear and tear appear less obvious.
How To Authenticate A Chanel Wallet
To authenticate your Chanel wallet, there are various tell-tale signs you can look out for to tell a real Chanel wallet from a fake. Here are our top tips:

Observe the overall shape of the wallet. Counterfeit Chanel wallets are usually constructed with less attention to the wallet frame and can feature a more rounded curve of the wallet flap or more rounded corners.

Check the Chanel label. A genuine Chanel logo is 3.3cm and should be embossed into the leather.

Verify the authenticity card. If the Chanel wallet was made in 1984 to 1986 the authenticity code should feature 6 digits, if it was made between 1986 and 2004 it should feature 7 digits, and if it was made from 2005 onwards it should feature 8 digits.

Check the Chanel lock or clasp. Like Chanel bags, Chanel wallets come with various clasps, so it's best to check if the wallet lock accurately reflects the Chanel bag style. For example, if it's a Chanel 2.55 wallet, it should feature the rectangular Mademoiselle lock without any logo.

Examine the quilting pattern. Quilting is an important part of every Chanel wallet. Each quilted square should ‘pop out’ slightly due to its neat, tight stitching. The stitching should also line up perfectly.

Everything About The Chic Chanel Boy Bag

Updated on 10 May 2022
Bringing the Chanel Boy Bag Back
Be it Millennials or GenZ – the Boy Chanel Handbag is one top that has got all their undivided attention. If you’re wondering what’s so special about it? Unwrapping everything about the timeless bag right here!
Pictured: Catherine Deneuve wearing a Chanel 2.55 bag featuring the curved back pocket in 1961 (Farabola/Leemage)
The famous quilting design is said to have drawn inspiration from the diamond quilts of jockey riding jackets.

Modern Style Inspired by History
The iconic Boy bag from the French Fashion house debuted in the Chanel Fall/Winter 2011 collection. Introduced by then-creative director Karl Lagerfeld as an ode to the relationship of Coco and her muse Arthur Edward ‘Boy’ Capel. To quote him, “Chanel used men’s underwear to make dresses; she had this boyish attitude, in fact, it is the very spirit of Chanel. She got it from Boy Capel, the great love of her life, which, incidentally, explains why the new bag is called the Boy Chanel.” Boy Capel cheered Coco’s spirit and her mission to push the gender norms.

In comparison to the Chanel 2.55, the Boy Chanel Bag with its classic rectangular handbag silhouette, motocross-style ribbed edges, a chunky chain strap, and distressed antique-bronze clasp, was crafted for young fashionistas. The design is said to have been inspired by a hunter’s cartridge bag that Coco used to carry. This classic bag with its androgynous style celebrated Coco’s pioneering masculine-feminine aesthetic.
Pictured: Catherine Deneuve wearing a Chanel 2.55 bag featuring the curved back pocket in 1961 (Farabola/Leemage)
Beauty is in the Details
The bold and boxy silhouette with its lego-brick CC squeeze-lock clasp gives the Boy Bag a punk vibe. Chunky metal chain along with a leather panel allows the best of both worlds – to be worn as a shoulder strap or a long cross-body strap. Additionally, some limited editions come with a short embellished top handle to carry by hand.

Boy Chanel handbags come in Diamond quilting or Chevron panelling. However, there are some Boy Bags with Reverso Quilting where they quilt the frame instead. Owing to its single flap nature and fabric lining, it’s lighter to carry in comparison to its Classic Flap equivalents.

The Boy Bag has been designed in a variety of materials. From a range of leathers to luxurious textiles. The most common leathers are calfskin and lambskin while tweed and leather are the predominant fabrics. Although Chanel has released many variations over the years, like canvas, PVC, denim textiles – the possibilities are endless when it comes to materials. It’s good to remember that Boy Bag has been released in combinations of exotic materials including crocodile and python. However, in 2018 Chanel announced that they would no longer produce items with exotic materials. Following this, the price of those particular bags has skyrocketed on the resale market.

Here’s a quick guide to ensure authenticity while buying a Boy Chanel Bag
  • Pay attention to the Chanel logo - where the letters merge, the fake bags are thicker instead of looking welded. Many counterfeits have C with curved tips while an authentic logo has flat tips.

Basics of How to Clean, Care, and Store a Boy Chanel Bag
Cleaning the interior
Use a microfiber cloth or lint roller and gently wipe any dirt residing inside the bag. The cloth lining of the Boy Chanel Bag makes it easier to clean as compared to other leather-lined bags.

Cleaning the exterior
As done with the interior, use a microfiber cloth to wipe the outside of the bag. You could also use a fragrance-free alcohol-free baby wipe over the exterior to refresh it.

Storing your Boy Bag
Pull the chain strap and put the excess chain part inside the bag. Place the leather part of the strap under the bag. Additionally, do not forget to put the bag in its dust bag for storage in your closet.

All About the Timeless Chanel Gabrielle Bag

Updated on 10 May 2022
An Ode to Coco Chanel: the Iconic Chanel Gabrielle
Introduced in the spring-summer 2017 collection, the Chanel Gabrielle became the ‘it bag’ to flaunt. Over the years, the late Karl Lagerfeld designer continued to recreate pieces that capture Coco Chanel’s equestrian spirit. This iconic bag is a blend of beauty and practicality - a combination Coco Chanel was a cheerleader for while designing the Chanel 2.55 Bag.
Pictured: Chanel Gabrielle, as illustrated by Karl Lagerfeld
Despite an unusual shape, the Gabrielle hobo is considered chic and classy. Patterned after the binocular cases men used to wear over the shoulder at the racecourse, Chanel Gabrielle carries a cool and contemporary vibe. The full line includes a shopping tote, a backpack, and a drawstring bag. From fashion parties to jet-setting, this timeless handbag has become the accessory of choice all over the world. Joining the classic Chanel Boy Bag that celebrates androgynous style cheering Coco’s pioneering masculine-feminine aesthetic, the Chanel Gabrielle has become a crowd favorite!
Beauty is in the details
Mounted on a rigid thermoformed base, the lower part of the bag is lightweight. The sturdy and structured base maintains the construct of the bag, ensuring the bag doesn’t topple while rummaging through the contents of the bag. Taking inspiration from jokey players, the top half of the bag is crafted with supple and smooth aged calfskin leather.

The adjustable strap flaunts luxurious silver-tone or gold-tone metal chains to rock the bag in more than one way. Wear it across the body, on your shoulder, or wrap the chain to make it a tote. Lined with the unique red fabric on the inside, the Chanel Gabrielle houses a zip pocket and a lipstick holder along with ample space to carry your essentials. Talk about functionality and aesthetics! Any situation or mood – the Chanel Gabrielle got you covered!
Beauty is in the details
To call the Chanel Gabrielle a single bag wouldn’t be enough. The chic design comes as a shopping tote, backpack, and a drawstring bag. Choose your favorite fashion companion from a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Available in seasonal basic colors like black, combination of beige & black, white & black. Also, in vibrant shades of red, pink, light blue, and blue.

    Size Matters

Chanel Gabrielle bag comes in a hobo version, available in three designs - a backpack, a large shopper and a supple purse contained in a rigid half-case. Amidst a myriad of colours, the Chanel Gabrielle is available in three sizes

Traditionally, the Classic Flap is a double flap bag that consists of an exterior flap closure and an interior flap compartment. However, on occasion, it has also been made in sizes that can only fit the exterior flap with an open interior. These are known as single flap bags and have since been discontinued since 2014, though it's still possible to find them in the preloved market.

    Small

If you’re the minimalist one - the small bag is your best bet to carry daily essentials like your lip balm, keys, cards, and more!

    Dimensions: 5.9’ x 7.9’ x 3.1’ inches

    Medium:

If you’re the one who likes it handy yet wants to store everything - the Medium Chanel Gabrielle can carry your smartphone, hand cream, trifold wallet, small notebook, perfume sticks, or chapsticks and more!

The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Chanel Classic Flap Bag

Updated on 26 April 2022
Everything You Need To Know About The Chanel Classic Flap Bag
Often recognised as the most famous handbag in the world, the Chanel Classic Flap bag is truly an icon. For most bag lovers or first-time buyers of designer handbags, it's the ultimate bag to add to any collection. But what makes the Classic Flap bag so unique and sought-after? Here are some intriguing facts about its surprising history and distinctive design, which bear the mark of Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel herself.
Since its debut, there have been various iterations of the Classic Flap bag, and it now comes in various sizes and leathers, such as calf leather, caviar, tweed, denim, among others.

What was the inspiration behind the Chanel Classic Flap Bag?
Speak the hallowed name of the house of Chanel and the image most likely to be conjured up is its trademark interlocking CC logo on the Chanel Classic Flap bag.

Formally christened the 11.12 bag after the Medium Classic Flap's style code, this legendary handbag was debuted in 1983 by Karl Lagerfeld as a reinterpretation of the Chanel 2.55 bag.

The Chanel Classic Flap bag shares many characteristics with its predecessor, although there are distinct differences. For starters, the Classic Flap bag is festooned with the interlocking CC logo clasp, while the 2.55 features the rectangular Mademoiselle lock. This prominent design feature was perhaps inspired by the logomania of the '80s, and was an attempt by Lagerfeld to rekindle the maison's old spark when he took over its reins.

Apart from the turn-lock clasp, the shoulder strap on the Classic Flap has leather threaded through its gold chain strap, whereas the 2.55 has stuck to its original design of an all-chain strap throughout the years.
Whether you’re on the hunt for the right size or a specific colour option, here’s our essential fact-check for buying a Chanel Classic Flap bag, or the 11.12.

    Design

A Chanel Classic Flap bag always refers to the Flap bag with a leather-woven chain strap and an interlocking CC clasp. Every element of the Classic Flap bag has its roots in Gabrielle Chanel's personal life. The diamond quilting was inspired by saddle blankets due to Gabrielle's love of equestrian sports, while the burgundy interior is allegedly the same hue as the convent uniforms she wore as a child.

  • 02

    Sizes

The Classic Flap bag has been created in an array of sizes for all your various needs. The most petite is the Extra Mini, a micro-bag that's just 17cm wide, while the largest is the Maxi at 34cm wide. Undoubtedly, the most popular size is the Medium Classic Flap bag that's substantially sized to fit all your essentials while being compact enough for all types of occasions.

When deciding between sizes, it's best to try them on in person. Our Second Edit showroom lets you experience your favourite preloved handbags offline. Note that the smaller sizes might not be able to fit larger smartphones like the iPhone 13 Pro, so checking out the measurements would be useful. Meanwhile, the larger sizes might overwhelm more petite frames even though they're functional enough to fit a foldable umbrella.

  • 03

    Colours

If you're a first-time buyer looking to invest in a Chanel handbag, you'll most likely be drawn to Chanel's most iconic shades in Black and Beige - and for good reason. These classic hues are the epitome of timelessness and versatility, and they tend to hold out well on the resale market.

But if you're a seasoned Chanel shopper looking to add a little oomph to your collection, then you'll be excited by the entire range of seasonal styles and rare releases that Chanel has created. Whether it's a bright orange shade or a glitter-encrusted style straight off the runway, set your imagination free with an inspired choice. Plus, Chanel usually does not re-release colours so if you find one you love, be sure to snap it up before it’s gone forever!

  • 04

    Materials

Once you've got a size and colour in mind, it's time to delve into the exciting material world of Chanel, which is defined by the maison's artisanal legacy. While Chanel is renowned for its signature lambskin and caviar leathers, the Classic Flap bag has appeared in a wide range of textiles and textures - such as brocade and even natural straw.

Before committing to a purchase, it’s worth it to learn more about long-term material care. If you plan to use your bag frequently (or even daily), then scratch-resistant caviar leather and aged calfskin leather are suitable for their durability and ease of maintenance.

  • 04

    Hardware

Finally, the style of Chanel’s hardware on a Classic Flap bag can make an equally significant impression as the bag’s material. The most common finishes in shiny gold and polished silver are perfect for everyday wear, but there are other styles to choose from. Brushed or matte hardware exude a more feminine elegance, while rarer options like So Black or Ruthenium add an edgier vibe.

How can I tell a real Chanel Classic Flap bag from a fake?
As one of the most coveted brands, Chanel is often also one of the most replicated. At Second Edit, authenticity is one of our highest priorities. Here are some signs to look out for.

    Check the CC logo

The History Behind the Timeless Chanel 2.55

Updated on 26 April 2022
The History Behind the Timeless Chanel 2.55
If you’re wondering what the iconic Chanel 2.55 is all about, we got you!

Let’s go back in time to the ‘50s. You’re in a dazzling Parisian party, the drinks and conversations are flowing and you’re struggling to cling to the bag under your arm while you’re sipping on your glass of wine, smoking a cigarette, or swaying to the music. If you feel the inconvenience just reading it, you’re not alone – Gabrielle Chanel felt it too. Come February 1955, when she crafted the Chanel 2.55 bag with the signature gold-plated chain. Now you know how the name ‘2.55’ came about!

The Chanel 2.55 bag liberated women’s hands – being the friend they could always trust. A first in history, for women of considerable social status to carry a bag on their shoulders, while keeping it fashionable and acceptable.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel declared as saying in Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie, “I was fed up with holding my purses in my hands and losing them, so I added a strap and carried them over my shoulder”. The Chanel 2.55 truly embodies Coco Chanel’s spirit of freedom and elegance.

The famous quilting design is said to have drawn inspiration from the diamond quilts of jockey riding jackets.

Magic is in the details
The Chanel 2.55 is an ode to Coco Chanel’s equestrian spirit. The shape, colour, pattern – everything houses a reference to her life.

That’s why it’s equally important to understand where Gabrielle Chanel came from. At the age of 12, she lost her mother to bronchitis and her father abandoned her. She spent her girlhood at a Catholic orphanage. We will see how her days at the convent found space in her designs.

Inspired by the nuns' belts from her Catholic orphanage, she created the iconic gold and silver-plated brass chain to serve as a hand or shoulder strap. This rectangular-shaped bag is secured by the classic Mademoiselle twist lock. Fashion lore mentions that the name ‘Mademoiselle’ was derived from the fact that Coco never married. The burgundy interior is yet another souvenir of the uniform she wore at the convent.

With its two flaps, the 2.55 has 7 pockets – a zipped pocket, a front pocket, a back pocket, three interior pockets, including an inner one that Chanel intended for lipsticks only (some say love letters, too) –  each a game-changer in realistic design. The Da Vinci masterpiece ‘Mona Lisa’ is said to have been the inspiration for the curve on the outer back pocket – the perfect place to stash tips back then, but, now, the perfect place to nest one’s phone.

Chanel 2.55 Reissue
In February 2005, to celebrate Chanel’s 50th anniversary, Karl Lagerfeld (who took over as Chief Designer in 1983) crafted the 2.55 Reissue. The Reissue honours the original details and features. Available in soft lambskin and calfskin leather, the 2.55 Reissue was cherished and celebrated by fashionistas all over the world.
